Tips for a relaxed, baby-led session with big brothers and sisters

A Special Time for the Whole Family

There’s something so heartwarming about watching an older sibling meet their brand new baby — whether it’s gentle cuddles, cheeky grins, or just a curious peek into the crib.

I believe your newborn session should celebrate the whole family. That’s why I always welcome older siblings into the studio — even if it brings a bit of beautiful chaos!

Here’s how we keep it fun, relaxed and completely baby-led — with space for big brothers and sisters to shine too.

✨ 1. We Do Sibling Shots First

Let’s be honest — toddlers aren’t famous for their patience. That’s why we usually start the session with the sibling photos. It makes them feel involved from the start, and they can relax (or head off for a play) once their bit is done.

🧸 2. Bring the Favourite Toy or Teddy

Sometimes it helps to have something familiar nearby – a soft toy, a blankie, their go-to book or even their iPad . It gives them something to hold (or hide behind!) and makes the photos extra personal.
One day, you'll look back and say “remember when they wouldn’t go anywhere without that rabbit?”

💬 3. Chat About It Beforehand

Let them know they’re coming along for a special adventure. You might say something like, “We’re going to get some photos of you being the amazing big brother/sister you are!” It helps them feel part of it — and proud of their new role.

📸 4. No Pressure, Ever

I don’t expect perfect poses or smiles. If they want to lie next to baby, great. If they just want to sit nearby and poke a toe out now and then – also great.

The best photos are often the ones that just... happen. No stress, no bribery needed (although snacks are always welcome!).

☕ 5. Pack Snacks (But Keep Them Studio-Friendly)

Snacks are always welcome — they can be total lifesavers! But try to keep them mess-free. Think rice cakes, fruit slices, raisins, or mini sandwiches over bright orange Wotsits or anything super sticky (we all love them, just maybe not next to a cream blanket 😅).

A few thoughtful snack options can help everyone stay calm and happy — especially big siblings who’ve just been little stars in front of the camera.

These Moments Matter

The way they look at their new baby. The grin that says “this is my little brother.” The wriggly hugs and giggles and even the cautious distance — it’s all part of the story. And it deserves to be captured.

If you’ve got a toddler tornado or a thoughtful big kid, they’re more than welcome in my studio.

We’ll take it as it comes — and make magic out of the mess.
