In-Home vs. Studio Newborn Sessions: Which One is Right for You?
In-Home vs. Studio Newborn Sessions: Which One is Right for You?
by Becky, EnaMay Photography
Welcoming your baby earthside is one of the biggest moments of your life—and capturing it beautifully is something you’ll never regret. One of the first questions I’m often asked is:
"Should we come to your studio, or do you offer in-home sessions too?"
The answer is: yes I do both—and each option has its own special magic.
Let’s break down the pros and considerations of each to help you choose the experience that suits your family best.
🏡 In-Home Newborn Sessions
Relaxed, personal, and storytelling-driven.
Perfect if you:
Want to stay in your own cosy environment
Love unposed, natural moments (think: cuddles on the sofa, siblings popping in)
Prefer your baby to be held or fed in your own space
Have a strong connection to your home as part of your family story
Benefits:
No need to pack bags or rush out the door
Authentic backdrops: your home becomes part of the story
Siblings can come and go easily, and pets too!
Sessions often feel more documentary — capturing how life really looked in those early days
Things to consider:
Light and space can vary — I’ll guide you on which rooms work best
Tidying is not essential, but clearing a couple of key areas (bedroom, living room) helps
It’s more lifestyle-focused than posed; think snuggles, feeds, and everyday beauty
📷 Studio Newborn Sessions
Minimal, calm, and baby-led.
Perfect if you:
Want simple, timeless portraits without clutter or distraction
Like the idea of being looked after from start to finish
Prefer soft styling, wrapped poses, and a consistent look
Would love to focus fully on your baby without housework or interruptions
Benefits:
My studio is warm, welcoming, and designed with new parents in mind
Full access to wraps and blanket, just bring yourselves and baby
Neutral backgrounds that keep the focus on connection
Lighting is controlled and flattering, ideal for those dreamy newborn shots
A moment of quiet, away from home—tea, coffee and cake included!
Things to consider:
You’ll need to travel (usually within baby’s first 2 weeks)
Studio sessions tend to follow a slower pace, with gentle posing and time to settle and feed
💡 So… Which One Is Right for You?
The truth is, there’s no wrong choice. It depends on the story you want to tell and the season of life you’re in.
✨ If you want your photos to capture the chaos and cuddle of everyday life, go in-home.
✨ If you want soft, polished portraits with everything taken care of, the studio is for you.
✨ Or… do both! Some families book maternity at home and newborn in the studio (or vice versa!).
