When is the best time for maternity photos?

Make it stand out

I usually recommend having your maternity photographs taken around 34 weeks, with flexibility depending on how you’re feeling. You can book before then so we have time to choose a date and plan your session in Edinburgh or the Scottish Borders.

There is something really special about maternity photographs. They capture a part of your story that deserves to be remembered too.

Pregnancy can feel exciting, uncomfortable, powerful, overwhelming, tiring and completely magical all at once. Your body is changing. Your family is changing. And while so much attention goes towards preparing for baby, you are part of this story too.

If you’re thinking about maternity photographs, here’s a little guidance on timing and what a session with me can look like.

Why I usually suggest around 34 weeks

Around 34 weeks can be a lovely time to photograph your bump, before those final weeks when you might feel heavier, more tired and ready for your baby to arrive.

Some mums find swollen ankles and puffiness become more noticeable towards the end. Every pregnancy is different, though, so we’ll choose a time that works for you and how you’re feeling.

If you’ve already passed 34 weeks, please don’t feel you’ve missed your chance. We can still plan something lovely at the stage you’re at.

Booking ahead gives us time to choose a date, talk through your ideas and decide where you’d like your photographs taken.

When should I book my maternity session?

You can reserve your maternity session before you reach 34 weeks. Booking ahead gives us time to choose a date, decide between the studio, home or outdoors, and chat about who you’d like to include.

If you’re further along in your pregnancy, you’re still welcome to ask about availability.

We’ll work around how you’re feeling.

Come as you are

So many mums tell me they feel a little unsure about having maternity photographs taken. They wonder what to wear, where to put their hands or whether they’ll feel comfortable in front of the camera.

You don’t need to arrive knowing any of that. I’ll gently guide you, and we’ll find what feels right for you.

These photographs can be about the curve of your bump, the way your hands naturally rest there and the quiet anticipation before your baby arrives. Simple moments that become lovely reminders of this time.

At home, in the studio or outdoors?

Some mums come to my garden studio in Innerleithen, where we can keep everything soft, simple and peaceful. You’ll have access to my client wardrobe, including a selection of dresses and fabrics we can have a little play with.

Coming to the studio also means you can leave your house exactly as it is. There’s no tidying to think about.

Others prefer a session at home. Alongside your bump, we capture familiar rooms and little details of where you were living while waiting for your baby. Those surroundings can become an important part of the memories.

Or we can head outdoors, among the hills, trees or somewhere that means something to you.

I offer maternity photography across Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders. We’ll choose a setting where you feel comfortable.

Your older babies and your bump

If you have older children, I’d love to include them too.

They’re growing and changing alongside your bump, and this is a special chapter to capture together. Their hands on your tummy, a cuddle on your lap or their excitement about who’s coming next.

Your partner is welcome, and your dog can be part of the session too. There’s also time for photographs of you on your own.

We’ll give everyone a little space to be themselves and see what unfolds.

A little time to play

My maternity sessions are very chilled out. We take our time, have a little play with the light, clothes and different ideas, and see what happens.

I’ll offer gentle guidance throughout, with room to move around, try things and find what feels comfortable. Sometimes it’s those little moments between photographs that become your favourites.

From bump to baby

One of the loveliest parts of my work is photographing a family during pregnancy, then seeing them again once their baby has arrived.

The photographs sit beautifully together. Your hands resting on your bump, then holding your baby. Your older child waiting to become a sibling, then cuddling their new little brother or sister.

I offer £100 off when maternity and newborn sessions are booked together, as a little thank you for trusting me with both parts of your story.

Planning your maternity session

Whether you picture photographs at home, time in the studio or an afternoon outdoors, we’ll make the session your own.

You can find the details and booking information on my maternity photography page.
